Dr. Azly Rahman:

Born in Singapore, grew up in Kg. Melayu Majidee, Johor Bahru, Dr. Azly Rahman was a pioneer of Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) Kuantan, a Malaysian school system modeled after amongst others, The Bronx School for the Gifted in Science in New York City. He has had experienced teaching in the MRSM school system and heading the English Department as well as a Gifted and Talented program. He co-wrote two English Language textbooks for the Malaysian Ministry of Education and was involved in teacher training projects in the area of Teaching Thinking Skills.



Before pursuing his studies, Dr. Azly taught the courses Foreign Policy, Introduction to Thinking, and Ethics. He coordinated the Universiti Utara Malaysia’s Thinking Skills Program, was appointed as the Coordinator of UUM’s Technology Learning Unit, and subsequently served as its director. He helped establish the Center for Innovations in Education. For his contribution to the university, he was awarded the university’s Service Excellence Award in 1997. He also served as member of UUM’s Senate. He started a multidisciplinary journal called PRAXIS, of the School of Languages and Scientific Thinking. He helped coordinate publication of articles in the fields of education, language, and literature.



Dr. Azly was a consultant of Creativity and Mind Development to several state governments and corporations. He lectured widely on creativity, critical thinking, and education in Malaysia and was also a weekly radio guest in Radio Alor Setar’s series on “Pemikiran”



Before leaving for his doctoral studies, he completed seven research projects in the fields of Human Development and Creativity, Political Science, Management, Brain Science, and Linguistic-Corpus Studies. Though accepted in 1997 into the Ph. D program at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education, Azly has chosen to pursue his doctorate in International Education Development at Columbia University New York by virtue of Teachers College’s world-renowned status as a comprehensive graduate school of education, as well as to take advantage of the multiculturalism of New York City’s educational setting.



Besides holding a Columbia University doctorate in International Education Development (Columbia University, 2004) and producing a dissertation on the development of hypermodern Malaysia as a “cybernetic” nation, Dr. Azly completed his fourth Masters in International Education specializing in Peace Studies/Education (Columbia University, 2005). He holds the degrees Bachelors in Education (Ohio University, 1985), Masters in Education specializing in Curriculum and Instruction (Ohio University, 1987), Masters of Arts in International Affairs specializing in Politics of Southeast Asia (Ohio University, 1987), and Masters of Arts in Communication and Education (Columbia University, 2000) specializing in the broad cultural, philosophical, and political aspects of new communications technologies.



During his early university days, he served as president of the Malaysian Student Association in Ohio University and was also elected President of The Southeast Asian Student Association of Ohio University. For his work in international understanding, he was initiated into the membership of the International Understanding Honor Society. He has been committed to promoting international understanding and multiculturalism in his teachings and writings for the last twenty years.



Dr. Azly is a member of the Kappa Delta Phi International Honor Society in Education, a professional and international honor society dedicated to recognizing and honoring academic excellence in the teaching profession. He was also chosen as a Teachers College Columbia University’s Ross Fellow for Educational Technology and worked as a research fellow with New York’s Channel Thirteen-WNET on an award-winning Disney Online educational web project. He co-wrote the proposal for the online teacher professional development project.



He served as a pioneering member on the editorial board for Teachers College’s online peer-reviewed journal Current Issues in Comparative Education, and has published a book review of American Critical theorist Peter McLaren’s Radical Multiculturalism in the journal Educational Researcher. The review was then translated into German by a Columbia University professor of education and published in University of Wuppertal, Germany.



Dr. Azly has also been involved with the American public school, holding a New Jersey state license to teach American History/World History/Social Studies and a license as an Administrator/Supervisor/Leader in an educational setting. He has held adjunct professorship positions in state and private universities in New York and New Jersey. He has mentored first-year teachers and has also taught the course “Philosophies of Education” to new teachers in the Bronx under the New Teacher Residency Program, established by The New York City Board of Education.



He has taught in three different departments; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and by American educational standards has achieved high levels of competencies and recognition. In short, he has been an accomplished educator in the United States. Among the courses Dr. Azly has taught in Malaysia and the United States are as follows:

Dr. Azly Rahman currently writes weekly on Malaysian political, educational, cultural and social changes in ILLUMINATIONS, a column in a progressive Malaysian online newspaper with wide national and international readership.
